Best Cult Fiction Movies on dvd
72Cult movies on DVD
Over a period of the last twenty- thirty years, there have been some great movies made which have found themselves being called 'cult classics'. The reason for this is that each of these films have a following, many people like being transported in to some futuristic scenario that is almost believable. Cult classics are films that people choose to watch many years after the first viewing. Some people have been scared and frightened by such films and can't watch them, but keep trying. There is a 'I can't bare to watch this film but I can't bare to miss what is happening' either attitude towards them.
In this selection of dvds I have made there will be one that triggers something deep in the back of your mind, when you went to see it. I remember hearing all about Clock work Orange before I finally went to see it, weeks after it came out. The hysteria had been swept along by the media that this film was going to turn all teenagers into some kind of monster. That is the power of films in this genre.
All of these movies are recommended and I am sure you will find one here that is suitable for a birthday or Christmas present, so take yourself back to the that time when you saw it at the cinema and let all those memories come flooding back.
BLADE RUNNER
This is not one of those films that has you on the edge of your chair with your hands covering your face, but it is a cult classic. Blade Runner was a series back in the 1980's. This is Ridley Scotts remastered final cut version, starring Harrison Ford.
It doesn't matter which version of the film you have seen, you will see plenty of new stuff in this final cut version. Blade Runner is a film about the future and what is left behind particularly the people who decide not to jump on a space ship and venture into the unknown. There have been a lot of differing versions of this movie because of it's popularity, but all have remained faithful to the original. This version is no different only offering some spectacular scenes not shown before to enhance the original.
This is a movie about the desperate despair of futility and of little hope, about what goes through your mind for survival. A truly brilliant film that should sit easily among all the cult classics so make sure you have it in your collection.
ALIEN - DIRECTORS CUT
This movie stars--Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright and Harry Dean Stanton.
An SOS signal wakes the crew up on their return journey back to Earth, it appears to be alien and the crew decide to investigate where it's coming from. You will be on the edge of seat from the beginning to the end. The tension in the film slowly mounts up until John Hurt is deep inside the alien ship leaning over an egg shaped object. What happens next makes this film a classic and will stay with you forever. One by one the crew are taken until there is just one crew member left, Sigourney Weaver plays Ripley who blows the ship up trying to destroy the creature.
An absolutely brilliant film, a cult classis that sits with the best Sci-Fi movies ever made, this film turned Sigourney Weaver in to a super star and I recommend that you add it to your collection.
A CLOCKWORK ORANGE
This movie stars, Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Magee, Michael Bates, Warren Clarke and John Clive.
The first twenty minutes of this movie set the tone for the rest of it. Two brutal beatings and a horrible rape of a young girl and much worse to come. McDowell the leader of a gang of thugs who go around fighting, stealing and raping women is caught by the authorities and sent to prison. He is offered the chance to join an experiment, which makes him sick after committing violence. This then makes him useless and defenceless. McDowell is released by the police after the experiment has been done and monitored for its affects. Code named Clockwork Orange McDowell then becomes the victim as he can't defend himself.
This was the vision authorities had of dealing with a broken society and thugs who were out of control. Directed by Stanley Kubrick this movie has lost none of its cult status after 30 years. The music played throughout the film adds to the tension and drama being played out, often being speeded up for effect. Add this film to your collection of movie classics and you will not be disappointed

THE EVIL DEAD

This movie is amazing. Its an old movie, and it was low budget, but it has an amazing story. This movie is pretty bloody and shows lots of it!! and the action scenes are awesome. It was directed by Sam Raimi (Director of Drag Me To Hell and Spider Man 3) and is probably his best movie. Evil Dead is a cult classic and is truly the ultimate horror experience.
The story revolves around two couples and a sister of one of the guys

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS

For those of you who have not seen this movie, be prepared to think about this for quite a long time after it's finished. Clarice Starling is an agent in training with the
F.B.I. She is bright, pretty and has a way of knowing how to handle
people. She is sent out to interview a serial
killer, known as "Hannibal the Cannibal". He was an esteemed brillant
psychiatrist and seems to be able to look into peoples souls. He may be
able to help in supplying information to help catch another very
demented serial killer nicknamed "Buffalo Bill" because of his desire to
skin his victims.
Hannibal takes a shine to Agent Starling
and will help her, but he wants something from her in return. For his own demented
reasons, he wants to hear the details of her life, and as they exchange
information, she is then forced to deal with the memories that have
plagued her throughout her life. He provides her with clues to who the

some very tense, hide your eyes, nail biting situations. Does she have the
will to take on this psychopath as well as her own demons? And don't
forget about Hannibal, the story wouldn't be complete, without showing

THE X-FILES - THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON.
This box set is an interesting choice to be in a cult classic movie collection. The reason I have put the first series in here is because you can not make nine further editions if people are not following it, and since The X-Files first came on to our tv screens all those years ago there has been a cult following of every series. I personally loved the first season, I thought the main characters were new and both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson were brilliant.
There are 6 dvds in this set which completes the first season, with 24 episodes to watch making this very good value. As this is the first season the two main characters Mulder and Scully are put together to find out if there is any truth in Mulders claim that UFO's are visiting Earth and that aliens may be among us. Scully isn't convinced at first but soon realises that Mulder is onto something. There is a sexual chemistry between the two of them but we see nothing apart from mutual acknowledgement and a working platonic relationship.
This one of the best series ever to be reproduced onto dvd and this first seaon is one that you should not miss.
THE COMPLETE OMEN COLLECTION

Disc 2 and 3: THE OMEN COLLECTOR'S EDITION
Disc 4: OMEN II: DAMIEN
Disc 5: OMEN III: THE FINAL CONFLICT

This series of 6 dvds which make up the collection is a must for all fans of scary movies. This classic set is an ideal Christmas present to an older child who likes horror films. The Omen movie stars Lee Remick and Gregory Peck. It is a movie that is like a psychological thriller, a boy who is 5 years old who suddenly has powers to kill and turn others into killers for him. A gripping suspense movie that has had few rivals over the past 20 years. Frighteningly good and watchable, this set has to be in your movie collection of all time cult classics films

Where have you been for the past 30 years if you have not heard of Star Wars- this box set of 6 dvds is all any budding Star War fan could want for. A true classic collection of dvds.
In the first film, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) gets to live out every boy's dream- ditch the farm and rescue a princess (Carrie Fisher). Accompanied by the roguish Han Solo (Harrison Ford, the only principal who was able to cross over into stardom) and trained by Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), Luke finds himself involved in a galactic war against the Empire and the menacing Darth Vader (David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones). The following film, The Empire Strikes Back (1980), takes a darker turn as the tiny rebellion faces an overwhelming onslaught. Directed by Irvin Kershner instead of Lucas, Empire is on the short list of Best Sequels Ever, marked by fantastic settings (the ice planet, the cloud city), the teachings of Yoda, a dash of grown-up romance, and a now-classic "revelation" ending. The final film of the trilogy, Return of the Jedi (1983, directed by Richard Marquand), is the most uneven. While the visual effects had taken quantum leaps over the years, resulting in thrilling speeder chases and space dogfights, the story is an uneasy mix of serious themes (Luke's maturation as a Jedi, the end of the Empire-rebellion showdown) and the cuddly teddy bears known as the Ewoks.

Yep, no arguments here, all fantastic cult films in their own right; and of course, we have an Alien prequel to look forward to this year. The trailers look awesome.
Many of my favourites in there Brian.
I love Blade Runner and must admit I liked the Film Noir narration that was subsequently removed. But the Director's Cut made more sense after Ridley Scott fixed the damage that the studio had done.
I watched the Evil dead recently and thought it looked dated but in its day it was groundbreaking. As far Clockwork Orange that is a true work of genius. Still chilling today.
Thanks for some great selections.
Lots of great movies on here! I was very glad to see you include X-Files (I am a huge nerd...I mean fan!) I was surprised you didn't include Pulp Fiction. Maybe on the next list? :) I have to admit, I have tried watching A Clockwork Orange a couple of times and have had a very difficult time getting into it. I'll have to give it another shot. Great job - voting up!

Brian. . .You have put together a great list of some of the greatest "Cult Classics" that's out there. These are movies I don't think we ever get tired of watching. I believe we all should have these films stored at home, watching on cold, dark winter nights. However, some of them, I still can't watch without giving me nightmares. Lol! The Evil Dead is one of them. . .Voted up and shared this wonderful hub of yours. Cheers!
