The best bike lock for your bike

You have just bought a new bike and the first thing you should do is get yourself a bike lock, it doesn't matter which type as long as it's one of the following, a Kryptonite lock, a U lock, a combination lock or Cable lock. Make sure you buy the best bike lock you can afford. If you have a $2000 mountain bike don't expect it still to be there if you have bought the cheapest cable lock from your local store. Like wise for $50 kids bike that will be left at friends and neighbors houses buy a small lock to stop other kids from using it.

Each of the best mountain bike locks has there own merits and all have there good points, my personal favorite is the Kryptonite type, but you pay your money you take your chance. Any bike lock is better than none at all, but having spent a great deal of your hard earned cash on getting what you want, why give it away. Your bike is the best thing that has ever happened to you, I know I'm the same, but to have your bike stolen is heart breaking, I have had one stolen not long ago, so don't let it happen to you.

Compared to what you have already spent on your bike, a lock is small change. Get the best if you can afford it, put two locks on but don't let anyone steal it. Thieves are normally opportunistic they don't go out to get a bike, they see one without a lock and take it. In the world of competitive cycling, down hill or XT XC or high trail you meet some fantastic people, mostly- over 99.9% of them are totally trust worthy, you could lend them your last dollar and they would bring it back. But there are people who go to these events looking for something that doesn't belong them, that's why you need a bike lock. Be prepared and always use it, it will only take a few seconds to secure your bike.

Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit 1410 Chain Bicycle Lock with New York Disc 3 Lock Chain Bicycle Lock.

One of the very best bike locks on the market, you might be put off by the price but don't be it is worth it, believe me. You just bought yourself a top notch bike, so get the best lock for it. This one.

There is nylon webbing around the chain to prevent it scratching your frame or wheels. The chain itself is case hardened,  triple heat-treated steel with crossbar-over-crossbar construction.

The chain links are 11 millimeter in diameter. These hexagonal links will resist attacks from most tools and withstand 16 tons of cutting force. This is a great bike lock, one which if you bike to work would be really useful. If you leave your bike out anywhere make sure you take this beast with you. Try and wrap the chain around fairly tightly this will improve the chances of it still being there when you get back. This bike lock is fairly heavy but if you have a fanny bag or rucksack with you it will not be a problem.

Kryptonite U lock

They are also extremely useful if you go biking with your mate as you can lock your bike to his through the back wheel and frame to his bike. Fasten your bike to a post or rail and it will be there for you when you return.

The main features of this lock are that it has a high security disc style cylinder and double deadbolt. There is an integrated dust protection cover to keep out the wind and rain from the lock mechanism.

Kryptonite Cable lock

Kryptonite Kryptoflex 1218 Combo Cable Bicycle Lock (1/2-Inch x 6-Foot)

A cable lock is light and flexible and it gives you the chance to wrap your cable around your frame and wheels. You can additionally attach the cable to post or fence post for added security.

This flexible cable lock has a 360 degree rotating head for easy access to your lock combination. The lock has a resettable combination, should you need to change it. These types of lock are pretty basic but they still put thieves off because they would sooner go somewhere else with no hassle. Best if you use this with a U lock as well unless you live in low crime area.

U Lock and a 4' feet cable.

Kryptonite Kryptolok Series 2 Standard Bicycle U-Lock (4-inch x 9-inch) with 4-Foot Flex Cable.

This set is a compromise, but a good one at that. You get all the benefits of a U lock and also the added security of having a flexible cable as well. You can use the U lock for attaching your bike to a secure post or fence, then use the flexible cable to fasten your frame to your wheels and pass through the U lock.

This Kryptonite series 2 U-Lock is made with a 13mm hardened steel shackle with a bent foot design and a patented deadbolt locking mechanism. You can register the key just in case you lose them with Key Safe. There is $1,500 anti lock protection scheme if you register when it is bought.

This combination of U lock and cable is one I like, you have flexibility of which you use you can always fasten and secure your bike with either item and the cost is quite reasonable.

Abus Steel Chain and lock

Abus Steel-O-Chain 880 Bicycle Lock (7mm x 3.58-Feet)

Abus make very good locks and you get a steel covered chain which is nearly 4 feet long x7mm in diameter.

The Abus hardened steel chain is 3 feet 7 "inches long and is 7 mm thick and is of the square chain variety. The chain is covered to help protect your bike and stop you get your fingers caught in the chain. The Integrated automatic locking padlock uses a Coded Reversible Key.

This lock might not be as good as the Kryptonite but it still looks a good defence against theft, and the price is very cheap for what your getting, this would suit someone who has second hand bike who doesn't want to lose it, but still doesn't want or require the very best lock
